“STAY IN – GET OUT – STAY AWAY”
To Report an Emergency or Suspicious Activity

STAY IN
Shelter in Place – General Guidance
No matter where you are on campus, the basic steps of shelter in place will generally remain the same:
- If you are inside, stay where you are unless the building you are in is affected. If it is affected, you should evacuate. If you are outdoors, proceed into the closest RIT building or follow instructions from emergency personnel on scene.
- Shelter-in-place in an interior room, above ground level, and with the fewest windows. If sheltering in a room with windows, keep away from the windows. If there is a large group of people inside a particular building, several rooms may be necessary.
- Shut and lock all windows (locking will form a tighter seal) and close exterior doors.
- Shut and lock interior doors where possible. Turn off lights.
- Turn off processes and/or experiments or equipment within the room.
- Make a list of the people with you and call the list in to Public Safety so they know where you are sheltering.
- Visit RIT’s emergency Web site at www.emergency.rit.edu or call 585-475-7075 (v), 585-475-7076 (tty). If possible, turn on a radio or television and listen for further instructions. Check for RIT Alert notifications on your mobile device or business office phone.
- Make yourself comfortable and look after one other. You will get word as soon as it is safe to come out.
GET OUT
Evacuation
An evacuation will be considered if the building we are in is affected or we must move to a location of greater safety. We will evacuate if the fire alarm sounds, unless advised differently by emergency response personnel. In the event of an evacuation, please quickly gather your personal belongings that are immediately available to you (purse, keys, cell phone, university ID card, etc.) and proceed to the nearest exit. Do not use the elevator. Assist mobility impaired persons. If possible, close doors on your way out.
After evacuation, move away from exits and entrances. Stay at least 100 feet away from the building or as emergency personnel on scene direct.
STAY AWAY
Area Avoidance
There will be instances when certain buildings, areas of campus, or the entire campus need to be avoided. This could be because of a fire, hazardous materials incident or other kind of threat. Do not go near the area.
RIT Alert
RIT Alert allows RIT to contact the community in the event of an emergency by sending messages via instant message, text message to cell phones, voice message (mobile or land-line) and e-mail. To learn more about RIT Alert, including instructions on how to update personal emergency contact information, go to http://finweb.rit.edu/buscont/massnotification.html
